Patio Covers and Pergolas That Make July Usable

A solid cover, an insulated cover or a pergola: the right one depends on which way the patio faces and what sits under it. We build all three and will tell you which you need.

Three Ways to Cover a Patio

From an open cedar pergola to a fully insulated roof with fans and lighting. Pick by sun exposure first, budget second.

Patio Roofs & Covers

Shade + Shelter

Patio covers and patio roofs: the straightforward way to make a patio usable. Engineered to take Texas storms as well as Texas sun, and tied into your existing roofline so it looks original to the house.

  • Engineered and permitted for local wind and load
  • Tied into the existing roofline, not bolted on as an afterthought
  • Fan and lighting rough-ins if you want them

Insulated Patio Covers

Cooler Underneath

Insulated patio covers: an insulated panel roof instead of a bare one. It makes a real, noticeable difference to the temperature underneath in August, and it quiets heavy rain.

  • Insulated panels cut radiant heat underneath
  • Much quieter in heavy rain than a bare metal roof
  • Clean finished ceiling with no exposed structure

Pergolas

Design Feature

Custom-built pergolas designed around your slab and your yard. Fixed or louvered, so you can dial the shade up in the afternoon and open it back up in the evening.

  • Designed to your slab, not dropped in from a kit
  • Louvered options let you adjust shade through the day
  • Becomes the anchor the rest of the yard works around

Before You Commit to a Patio Cover or Pergola

  • Open, solid or insulated. A pergola filters the sun, a solid cover blocks sun and rain, and an insulated cover also keeps the heat off. Choose for how you want to use the space in August.
  • Attached or freestanding. An attached cover extends the house roofline; a freestanding structure can sit out by the pool or the fire pit.
  • Think about the rooms behind it. A deep solid cover darkens the rooms that look onto it. Skylight panels or an open pergola section keep daylight coming in.

How a Patio Cover or Pergola Project Runs

  1. 1

    A free estimate visit

A specialist measures the patio, walks the access a crew would use, and talks through what you want the space to do. You get a firm written estimate, not a range.

  2. 2

    Drawings, permit and HOA

We draw the job, file the permit with your city and follow it through review. Where an HOA needs a submittal, we prepare the drawings it asks for.

  3. 3

    One crew, one schedule

The same team builds the whole thing in the right order, so the structure, the electrical and the finish work are not three companies blaming each other.

  4. 4

    Walkthrough and warranty

We walk the finished job with you, settle the punch list, and leave you with one warranty covering the work rather than a folder of separate ones.

Patio Covers & Pergolas: common questions

Often, yes. Hail dents on metal panels, a failed section of decking or a post that has rotted at the base are usually repairs. Replacement is the honest answer when the structure was never engineered for load, when the ledger connection to the house has been leaking, or when the posts are undersized for the span. Send a photo and we will tell you which one you are looking at before anyone comes out.

Almost always for anything attached to the house. We file it and handle the inspection so it doesn’t stall your schedule.

Yes, if the cover is sound and tied properly into the house. Most screen rooms we build go under an existing cover. If the posts are undersized or the slab has moved, we fix that first.

Depending on size, complexity and weather, most patio projects are completed within 3 to 4 weeks of the start date. We work with your city on the building permit.

Keep the gutters clear, look at the flashing where the cover meets the house after big storms, and repaint or restain wood on the schedule the finish calls for. Metal and insulated panels mostly need a rinse. If you see water stains at the ledger, call us early, because that is the connection that matters.

Both keep off sun and rain. If the patio faces west, or you plan to add screens or glass later, the insulated roof is the one we usually steer people toward.

Which cover does your patio need?

Three questions about your own patio. It’s a starting point, not an estimate. The estimate visit checks the roofline, the slab and the trees.

1. Where is the sun at 5pm in July?
2. What will sit under it?
3. When will you use it in summer?

Answer the three questions to see a recommendation.
