What is a patio enclosure?

A patio enclosure closes in an existing covered patio with screens or glass panels, so you can use the space with fewer bugs, less wind and less pollen. It usually builds on a roof and slab that are already there, which is what separates it from a sunroom built from the ground up.

Before you choose one, check what you already have. The cover needs to be sound and the slab needs to drain away from the house, because an enclosure will not fix either and can make both harder to reach later. Screens suit a shady patio you use in spring and fall. Glass panels stretch the season but also hold heat on a sunny side, so direction matters. If you want to use the room in every season, compare it against a true sunroom before you decide.

What comes with our Patio Enclosures

No Bugs

A screen room gives you the patio back on the evenings you would otherwise stay inside: mosquito season, spring pollen and rain that blows in sideways. It keeps the open-air feel, so it is still a patio, just one you can use.

Start by deciding what you want the room to do. A screen room keeps the breeze and loses the bugs. If you want to keep out cold wind or use the space for more months, look at an enclosure with removable or sliding panels, or go all the way to an all-season room.

  • Keeps insects and windblown debris out
  • Still completely open to the air and the view
  • Screen doors and pet-resistant mesh options

Many patio enclosure projects we build are planned together with the patio cover, sunroom and patio door, so the whole patio is designed once.

Installing and caring for Patio Enclosures

Most screen rooms go under an existing cover. If your cover is sound and tied properly into the house, screening it is simple. If the posts are undersized or the slab has moved, we fix that first, because a screen frame shows every bit of movement.

Blackland clay moves slabs, and a gap at the bottom of a screen wall lets in exactly the bugs you paid to keep out. We fit the bottom rail to the slab as it is and allow for movement.

What drives cost: the number of openings, the screen type (standard or pet-resistant), doors, knee walls and whether the cover needs work first. Enclosing a patio may need a permit; see our permit guide. The work goes measure, frame, screen, doors, then final check.

Patio Enclosures: common questions

Mosquitoes are active here from roughly March through November, with the worst of it after spring and early-fall rain. A screened enclosure is the one thing that reliably gives you the yard back in the evening during those months, because it works without spraying anything and without wind. It does not help with heat. For that you want shade or an enclosed room.

Almost always for anything attached to the house. We file it and handle the inspection so it doesn’t stall your schedule.

Usually. If the cover is sound and tied properly into the house, screening it is simple. If the posts are undersized or the slab has moved, we fix that first, because a screen frame shows every bit of movement.

Depending on size, complexity and weather, most patio projects are completed within 3 to 4 weeks of the start date. We work with your city on the building permit.

Hose them down gently a couple of times a year and brush off pollen in spring. Pet-resistant mesh is thicker and holds up to claws and kids better. If a panel tears, it can usually be rescreened on its own without replacing the frame.

Screens can tear or stretch in hail or in a hard wind with debris. That is usually a panel repair, not a rebuild. The cover above takes the brunt of it.

Before You Commit to Patio Enclosures

  • Know what a screen room does. It keeps out mosquitoes, pollen and blowing debris while the space stays open to the air. It does not cool it, so most sit under a solid or insulated roof.
  • Choose the mesh and the doors. Pet-resistant mesh and the position of the screen doors are worth deciding early, especially where the dog and the grill both need a route out.
  • Check the pool barrier. If there is a pool on the lot, new walls and doors can change the barrier that code requires, so it gets planned as part of the design.

How does a patio enclosure project run?

  1. 1

    A free estimate visit

A specialist measures the patio, walks the access a crew would use, and talks through what you want the space to do. You get a firm written estimate, not a range.

  2. 2

    Drawings, permit and HOA

We draw the job, file the permit with your city and follow it through review. Where an HOA needs a submittal, we prepare the drawings it asks for.

  3. 3

    One crew, one schedule

The same team builds the whole thing in the right order, so the structure, the electrical and the finish work are not three companies blaming each other.

  4. 4

    Walkthrough and warranty

We walk the finished job with you, settle the punch list, and leave you with one warranty covering the work rather than a folder of separate ones.
